When Custody Orders Turn Deadly—The Tragic Case of Dylan Redwine
In this episode of Crisis & Consequences, we examine the heartbreaking case of Dylan Redwine, a 13-year-old Colorado boy who disappeared during a court-ordered Thanksgiving visit with his father in November 2012.
What initially appeared to be a missing child investigation quickly evolved into a complex homicide case involving a fractured family, disturbing evidence, and nearly a decade-long search for justice. As investigators uncovered evidence inside the home and Dylan's remains were discovered in the mountains near his father's property, suspicion increasingly focused on the person who was supposed to protect him.
We explore the troubled relationship between Dylan and his father, the evidence presented during the lengthy murder trial, and the emotional testimony from family members who spent years searching for answers. This case also raises difficult questions about custody arrangements, family court decisions, and how children caught in contentious divorces can become vulnerable.
This episode is a devastating reminder of the lasting impact of family violence and the long road many families travel in pursuit of truth and justice.
Content Warning: This episode contains discussions of child homicide, family violence, disturbing evidence, and trauma. Listener discretion is strongly advised.

In this episode of Crisis & Consequences, we examine one of the most disturbing child abuse cases in American history—the heartbreaking story of the Turpin family. For decades, thirteen children endured unimaginable abuse, neglect, starvation, and isolation at the hands of their parents, David and Louise Turpin.
We explore how years of captivity remained hidden from the outside world, the extraordinary courage of 17-year-old Jordan Turpin, whose daring escape led to the rescue of her siblings, and the criminal case that followed. We also discuss the troubling failures within the child welfare system that left some of the children vulnerable to further abuse even after their rescue.
This episode is difficult but important, highlighting not only unimaginable cruelty, but also resilience, survival, and the enduring strength of the Turpin children as they continue rebuilding their lives.

In this episode of Crisis & Consequences, we examine the shocking 2021 murder of Ryan Cooper, a devoted father of four from the small farming town of Traer, Iowa. What initially appeared to be a possible home invasion quickly unraveled into a disturbing web of deception, obsessive Snapchat messages, digital evidence, and an affair that spiraled into murder.
As investigators dug deeper into the case, they uncovered thousands of Snapchat exchanges between Ryan’s wife, Karina Cooper, and a much younger farmhand named Huston Danker. What began as flirtation evolved into violent fantasy, discussions of murder, and ultimately a deadly conspiracy that left four children without their father.
This episode explores how digital footprints, deleted messages, and overconfidence helped expose a crime that the killers believed would never be traced.
⚠️ Content Warning
This episode contains discussions of:
Murder
Graphic violence
Infidelity
Manipulation and coercion
Firearms
Explicit sexual content
Trauma involving children and family loss
Listener discretion is strongly advised.
Episode Summary
On the evening of June 17, 2021, Ryan Cooper and his family spent what appeared to be a completely ordinary night together after attending their son’s baseball game in Traer, Iowa. By the early morning hours of June 18th, Ryan was dead — shot twice in the face while asleep in his recliner.
His wife, Karina Cooper, called 911 in hysterics, insisting an intruder must have entered the home. But investigators quickly found inconsistencies in the story. No signs of forced entry. No evidence of an intruder. And eventually, no believable explanation for the secret relationship between Karina and 23-year-old Huston Danker.
As detectives uncovered deleted Snapchat conversations, internet searches, timelines, and phone activity, a disturbing picture emerged: a months-long emotional and physical affair fueled by obsession, fantasy, jealousy, and increasingly violent conversations about killing Ryan Cooper.
Prosecutors argued that what Karina later dismissed as “online fantasy” crossed into reality the night Ryan was murdered.
After years of investigation, arrests, and courtroom testimony, both Karina Cooper and Huston Danker were convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Key Highlights
The Murder of Ryan Cooper: A beloved Iowa father is found shot to death inside his family home.
The 911 Call: Karina Cooper’s extreme hysteria immediately draws scrutiny from investigators.
No Intruder: Evidence at the scene suggests the killer was already inside the home.
The Affair: Thousands of Snapchat messages reveal a secret relationship between Karina Cooper and Huston Danker.
Digital Evidence: Deleted messages, search histories, app data, and Snapchat records become critical to the investigation.
Murder Fantasies Turn Real: Conversations about shell casings, death, and “getting this done” take on horrifying significance after Ryan’s murder.
Conflicting Stories: Both Karina and Huston repeatedly minimized and denied their relationship during early police interviews.
The Trial: Jurors heard explicit Snapchat messages, forensic testimony, and evidence of coordinated deception.
The Verdicts: Karina Cooper and Huston Danker both receive life sentences without parole.

Attempted Murder of Hannah Pettey– Ep.125
Jun 17, 2026
Jun 17, 2026
32 min
In this episode of Crisis & Consequences, we examine the shocking attempted murder case of Hannah Pettey — a young Alabama mother whose husband allegedly poisoned her slowly over months with lead-filled capsules while presenting himself as a loving caregiver.
What began as mysterious illness, rapid weight loss, and debilitating pain would eventually uncover a calculated pattern of coercive control, financial manipulation, and attempted murder hidden behind the image of a respected healthcare professional.
This is the story of survival, gaslighting, domestic abuse, and the terrifying reality that danger sometimes comes from the person closest to you.
⚠️ Content Warning
This episode contains discussions of attempted murder, domestic violence, coercive control, gaslighting, poisoning, psychological abuse, medical trauma, and emotional manipulation. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
Episode Summary
Hannah Pettey appeared to have a picture-perfect life in Hartselle, Alabama. Married young to chiropractor Brian Thomas Mann, she was raising children and building a family life in a close-knit Southern community.
But behind closed doors, Hannah’s world was narrowing. According to testimony later presented in court, Brian isolated her from family, restricted her independence, and controlled many aspects of her life.
Then, during their contentious divorce in 2021, Hannah’s health began to collapse.
After Brian gave her “vitamin capsules” he claimed would boost her immune system, Hannah rapidly became gravely ill. She lost more than 40 pounds in just a few months, became too weak to walk unassisted, suffered severe pain, and eventually experienced life-threatening seizures.
Doctors at UAB Hospital discovered the horrifying cause: extreme lead poisoning.
Investigators later alleged Brian Mann had been secretly filling capsules with lead particles and feeding them to Hannah over a period of months — all while taking out multiple life insurance policies worth more than $1 million on her life.
The case became national news not only because of the poisoning itself, but because of the profound psychological manipulation surrounding it. Hannah later described years of isolation, confusion, and gaslighting that made it difficult to even recognize she was being harmed.
After a 2025 trial, Brian Mann was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole.
Hannah survived — but with permanent physical injuries and emotional scars that will last a lifetime.
Key Highlights
The Slow Poisoning: Hannah Pettey unknowingly ingested lead-filled capsules over several months.
Extreme Medical Crisis: Doctors discovered critically dangerous lead levels throughout her body, including her bones and colon.
Coercive Control: Testimony revealed years of isolation, manipulation, and psychological abuse.
Life Insurance Motive: Prosecutors argued Brian Mann stood to gain over $1.3 million from Hannah’s death.
Gaslighting as Abuse: The case highlights how psychological manipulation can conceal life-threatening violence.
A Mother’s Intervention: Hannah’s survival may have hinged on her mother recognizing something was terribly wrong.
The Trial & Conviction: Brian Mann was convicted of attempted murder in 2025 and sentenced to life without parole.
Survival & Recovery: Hannah rebuilt her life after surviving one of the most disturbing domestic violence cases in recent memory.
Themes Explored
Domestic violence and coercive control
Gaslighting and psychological manipulation
Financial motives behind intimate partner violence
Isolation as an abuse tactic
Medical abuse and poisoning
Survivor resilience and recovery

In this episode of Crisis & Consequences, we explore the groundbreaking case that forever changed criminal investigations: the murders committed by Colin Pitchfork and the birth of forensic DNA profiling. What began as two devastating crimes in quiet English villages became the first criminal case solved through DNA evidence—launching a forensic revolution that continues to shape modern justice systems today.
⚠️ Content Warning
This episode contains discussions of sexual assault, murder, violence against teenage girls, coercive interrogation, and predatory behavior. Listener discretion is advised.
Episode Summary
In 1983, 15-year-old Lynda Mann disappeared while walking home through a secluded pathway in Leicestershire, England. She was later found raped and murdered. With limited forensic tools available at the time, investigators had little to work with, and the case went cold.
Three years later, history repeated itself when another 15-year-old girl, Dawn Ashworth, was assaulted and murdered in nearly identical circumstances. Police believed the same killer was responsible and soon focused on a vulnerable teenage suspect who confessed during intense questioning.
But just miles away, scientist Sir Alec Jeffreys had recently discovered a revolutionary technique: DNA fingerprinting.
When investigators tested the suspect’s DNA, the results stunned everyone—not only did the evidence prove he was innocent, but it confirmed that both murders had been committed by the same unidentified man. In doing so, the case became the first in history where DNA evidence exonerated a suspect.
Police then launched the world’s first mass DNA screening operation, testing thousands of local men in hopes of identifying the killer. Eventually, a chance conversation overheard in a pub exposed an attempt to cheat the system—and led investigators directly to Colin Pitchfork.
This episode explores not only the horrific crimes, but also the scientific breakthrough that transformed modern forensic investigations forever.
Key Highlights
The Birth of DNA Fingerprinting: Alec Jeffreys’ accidental discovery revolutionized forensic science.
The Victims: 15-year-olds Lynda Mann and Dawn Ashworth, whose murders shocked Leicestershire communities.
Wrongful Confession: DNA evidence cleared Richard Buckland after he falsely confessed under interrogation pressure.
The First DNA Dragnet: Over 5,000 men voluntarily submitted blood and saliva samples in the world’s first mass screening operation.
The Break in the Case: Colin Pitchfork was exposed after paying a coworker to take the DNA test in his place.
A Landmark Conviction: Pitchfork became the first murderer ever convicted using DNA evidence.
Ethical Questions: The case sparked ongoing debates about privacy, government databases, and genetic surveillance.
Themes Explored
The evolution of forensic science
False confessions and coercive interrogation
DNA evidence and wrongful convictions
Privacy vs. public safety
Genetic databases and ethical concerns
The long-term impact of violent crime on families and communities
Discussion Questions
Would you support mass DNA screening to solve a violent crime? Why or why not?
Should law enforcement retain DNA profiles from people never charged with a crime?
Do you support the use of genetic genealogy in criminal investigations?
How do we balance public safety with privacy rights?
Did this case change the way you think about forensic evidence?

n this episode of Crisis & Consequences, we travel to Placerville, California, during the summer of 1984—a season that forever changed a small foothill community. What began as the disappearance of a teenage foster child quickly escalated into fear, panic, and the realization that a predator was stalking vulnerable young girls in the shadows of the Eldorado National Forest.
⚠️ Content Warning
This episode contains discussions of murder, violence against teenage girls, sexual assault, stalking, trauma, and child abuse. Listener discretion is strongly advised.
Episode Summary
When 14-year-old Denise Galston accepted a ride from a man she knew around town, no one realized it would mark the beginning of a terrifying killing spree. Within weeks, Denise, her twin sister Debbie, and 18-year-old Lynda Burrill would all be found murdered in remote areas of the Eldorado National Forest.
At the center of the investigation was Michael Anthony Cox—a local forestry worker with a troubling history of degrading and targeting vulnerable girls, many of whom lived in foster care or unstable situations.
As investigators pieced together the crimes, one witness held the key to the case: 17-year-old Joanna Napoletano, who witnessed Denise’s murder but remained silent for months out of fear. Her eventual testimony helped lead authorities to the truth, though years later the case would become even more complicated through recanted statements and legal challenges.
This episode examines not only the crimes themselves, but the fear, trauma, and systemic vulnerabilities that allowed a predator to target girls he believed no one would protect.

A Witness in Fear: Joanna Napoletano’s struggle with trauma, silence, and eventually coming forward.
Contradictory Testimony: Later recantations and questions surrounding witness credibility complicated the case for years.
Predators & Vulnerability: How foster youth and marginalized teens are often targeted because offenders assume they are “disposable.”
Lessons in Safety: The episode explores intuition, the buddy system, reporting violence, and community responsibility.

In this episode of Crisis & Consequences, we explore one of the most psychologically complex cases in true crime history: the story of Ruth Finley and the mysterious stalker known only as “The Poet.” Set against the backdrop of Wichita’s fear during the reign of the BTK Killer, this case spiraled from terrifying harassment into a shocking revelation no one saw coming.
⚠️ Content Warning
This episode contains discussions of stalking, assault, childhood sexual abuse, dissociation, self-harm, and psychological trauma. Listener discretion is advised.
Episode Summary
Beginning in 1977, Wichita resident Ruth Finley became the target of an escalating stalking campaign involving threatening phone calls, disturbing poems, vandalism, fake letters sent to businesses, and violent attacks. As fear of the BTK killer gripped the city, police and the public wondered whether Ruth’s tormentor could be connected to the infamous serial killer.
Over the course of several years, “The Poet” terrorized Ruth and her husband Ed with cryptic rhymes, threats, property damage, and increasingly dangerous encounters. Detectives launched surveillance operations, investigated possible suspects, and devoted enormous resources to the case.
But in 1981, investigators uncovered a truth more shocking than anyone imagined: the stalker they had been hunting did not exist in the way they believed.
